Apex calls itself the Peak of Good Living, and Salem Street is where a lot of its small businesses got their start: restaurants, boutiques and service shops in the brick storefronts around the old train depot. Most of the locally owned businesses below are spread well beyond downtown, along US 64, NC 55 and US 1, or run by owner-operators working out of home offices in neighborhoods like Scotts Mill and Bella Casa.
